WISDOM for SIMPLE LIVING

The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak. - Hans Hoffman

There is no power on earth that can neutralize the influence of a high, simple, and useful life. - Booker T Washington

I love tranquil solitude
And such society
As is quiet, wise, and good.

GIFT OF SIMPLICITY

THE GIFT OF SILENCE:

Quieting my voice so I can be refreshed by the stillness for which my spirit desperately longs.

FRAMING PROJECT

Evan has been having a wonderful experience at his new school.  He loves what he is learing and asks to stay after school several days a week.  I have been picking him up at school around 5:00 or 5:30 on those evenings.

He has been working with Mr. Bell to create the Module Signs out of the materials that each module teaches.  Evan finished the sign for the "Framing" Module and is now working on the "Tile" Module.  Here is his finished sign for the "Framing" Module (he did all the work):

FAMILY CONNECTIONS

At some point in our lives we attempt to reconnect with family members.  We are searching for an identity; love; loyalty and understanding.

We usually try to make our bonds stronger when we lose family that is close or dear to us.

Because I live so far away from my parents and my siblings; I feel disconnected and long for close family ties.  I am keenly aware of how alone I am sometimes.  This helps me to identify those who feel the same things or experience the same things.

Yesterday was an exciting day for Victor and our children.  Circumstances that can only be described as divine intervention; made it possible for Victor to be re-united with his daughter, Crystal.  We last saw her over 10 years ago and have often wondered where she was and if we would be able to find her.

While Victor has been actively looking for her this past year; Crystal was actively looking for Victor and her siblings.  Victor was able to spend several hours with her last night and then she came over to meet her brothers and sisters.

She is a beautiful young woman (will be 16 in January).  She is a lot like Aislyn in appearance and mannerisms.  She is excited about spending time with her extended family.  She was happy to find out that Lucy was still alive because her other grandmother passed away.  She desperately wants to build the family bonds and we are happy to have her.  I hope that what she is seeking can be fulfilled by her newly found family.

LAS MANANITAS

Yesterday was Tia Jessica's birthday (Victor's Aunt and Lucy's younger sister).  Every time we have a birthday party up on Lompoc, Santa Maria or Nipomo the following song is sung (rather than the traditional birthday song):

Estas son las mañanitas, que cantaba el Rey David,
Hoy por ser día de tu santo, te las cantamos a ti,
Despierta, mi bien*, despierta, mira que ya amaneció,
Ya los pajarillos cantan, la luna ya se metió.

Que linda está la mañana en que vengo a saludarte,
Venimos todos con gusto y placer a felicitarte,
Ya viene amaneciendo, ya la luz del día nos dio,
Levántate de mañana, mira que ya amaneció.

Las Mañanitas is a traditional Mexican song that is sung on birthdays and other important holidays. It is often sung as an early morning serenade to wake up a loved one. At birthday parties it is sung before the cake is cut.

As a traditional song with a long history, there are variations of Las Mañanitas, with many different verses. At most Mexican parties only the first two verses are sung, but I have included some additional verses that are occasionally sung, particularly when the song is performed by mariachis.

The following is the translation:

This is the morning song that King David sang
Because today is your saint's day we're singing it for you
Wake up, my dear*, wake up, look it is already dawn
The birds are already singing and the moon has set

How lovely is the morning in which I come to greet you
We all came with joy and pleasure to congratulate you
The morning is coming now, the sun is giving us its light
Get up in the morning, look it is already dawn

Additional verses:

The day you were born all the flowers were born
On the baptismal font the nightingales sang

I would like to be the sunshine to enter through your window
to wish you good morning while you're lying in your bed

I would like to be a Saint John I would like to be a Saint Peter
To sing to you with the music of heaven

Of the stars in the sky I have to lower two for you
One with which to greet you and the other to wish you goodbye

What a great birthday song!

LOMPOC

We spent the day in Lompoc today for a family reunion with Victor's family.

On the way out we stopped at the Lompoc Cemetary and brought some flowers to Grandma Mead.

This is my way of keeping my promise to Grandma.  She asked me to always remember her.

AND SHE SCORES!!!!!!

Allisa had her very first Volleyball game yesterday afternoon.

She is the tiniest player on her team.  She had a lot of fun!  She still dances around the court...

Allisa is a good sport and is always smiling, even when she misses.  The girls on the team are awesome and they are constantly building each other up.

The first set was very close.  The other team one by 1 point.  The second set was also very close.  Our team one by 2 points...

Allisa may not be good at returning the ball; she is, however, very good at serving.  Because of her size the other team was not prepared for her serves and Allisa scored!!!!! :)  I believe this happened a couple times.  She was very happy and her team mates cheered her on.

I tried to video tape some of the game on my phone so that I could show Victor.  You can hear me screaming in the back ground.  Yes, I am a crazy mom when it comes to my kids! :)

Next game I am going to take the video camera so that I can post it.

WHICH CITY IS THE MOST EDUCATED

I was listening to KUSC's morning show on the way to work and they were talking about an article found in Forbes.  The article was highlighting the most educated and cities in the United States and also revealed the least educated.

The top 5 educated cities:

Seattle, WA
Boston, MA
Washington, D.C.
San Jose, CA
San Francisco, CA

These cities have the highest percentage of adults with degrees.

Washington, D.C. had a whopping 47%.

The city with the lowest percentage of degreed adults is found in Southern California:

RIVERSIDE

The second to the last least degreed/educated city is none other than Sin City itself:

LAS VEGAS

Maybe that's why gambling is such a popular profession in the state of Nevada.  This career option does not have regular dependable compensation.

Anyway, I thought this was interesting.

ADVENTURES IN VOLLYBALL

At the beginning of the school year Allisa had asked if she could participate in after school activities.  I said she could... then waited to hear from her what she had chosen to do.

She came home one afternoon and asked if she could participate in Vollyball.  I said sure.

This is the first year that Mesa Union will participate in a vollyball league.

I pick Allisa up after work.  I usually get there a few minutes before she is done with practice.  The first time I sat and watched I noticed that she dances around on the court (nervous energy).  My thoughts were:  "She is driving the coach crazy."

She does listen to instruction.  She was up to serve the ball and she tipped it with her knuckles resulting in the ball just rolling off her hand and dropping to the floor.  The coach came over and explained to Allisa how to serve the ball.  On the second attempt the ball arched beautifully over the net and was never returned by the opposing team.  Allisa scored a point. :)

Every day I watch her as she participates and I have noticed a major improvement.  She doesn't dance around the court and her serves are powerful (building her confidence).  She leaves the court with a huge smile; with her hair all over the place and little smears of dirt across her nose and chin.

Her first game is tomorrow after school.  I am really excited for her.
